This image is based on an ancient Carmelite icon on the island of Cyprus. The Carmelites settled there in the 13th century after being expelled from Mt. Carmel by Saracen incursions. The image depicts the Mother of God shielding the Carmelites under her protective mantle and interceding on their behalf before her divine Son.
